The rooms at Woodlands Lodge are full of pattern and colour, with floral wallpaper and a gilt mirror, so there’s more behind you in the morning photos than a plain white wall. It’s a good choice for a winter wedding, and the house looks right at home dressed up for Christmas.

A big bay window keeps the ceremony room bright, even in January. Outside, there’s an archway cut clean through the conifer hedge, and it’s the best spot for portraits. It frames a bride on her own, or the two of you together, against solid dark green, and it works just as well in December as in June. The lawn in front of the white house has room for the whole group.

Dinner is in the conservatory, under a glass roof and draped swags, bright during the day and snug once evening comes.
