The Orangery, Maidstone

You could shoot a whole day at the Orangery without repeating a background. Nine acres in Kent, and inside them a lake, a millstream with a metal footbridge over it, a woven willow archway, a rope swing by the log store, gravel paths, a walled garden and flint-and-brick arches, so we keep moving you and every frame looks like somewhere else. The ceremony was outdoors under a floral arch with a harpist playing beneath the trees, and the white garden pavilion alongside took the signing. Indoors, the glass Orangery is bright and chandeliered with garden on every side, which holds up on a grey day and takes strong colour without going muddy. That mattered here, on a South Asian celebration in red and gold with dhol drummers and pink smoke flares going off on the bridge. Plan around the lake after dark, because fireworks go up over the water and it doubles every one of them.
